Ark - A Different Kind Of Blue (BW018)

Swiss-born Max Lässer has been playing professionally for more than 20 years and this, his ninth album, is a showcase for his mastery of a prodigious range of instruments. Whether Lässer is playing guitar, keyboards, mandolin, dobro, bass or percussion, you can hear the love and pain squeezed out of the instrument. What is unique about his style is the glorious way in which he draws on the Swiss folk roots of his childhood and blends these, plus more contemporary influences, with a World Music consciousness.

A persistent theme in Max's music is a concern for the world on which we hold a temporary tenancy. The title track uses the unique voice of Hyemeyohsts Storm in a spoken poem over a beautiful musical backdrop to address the issue of living in sympathy with our environment. Other elemental moments break over the listener in songs like 'Oceana' where the sound of the sea introduces and closes the track and Paul McCandless' oboe playing pulls you deep into the music's eddying depths. The reggae-influenced rhythm of 'Mountain Magic' conjures cool streams and hot blue skies before tumbling into an unforgettable cascade of piano from the supremely talented Christoph Stiefel. Elsewhere the acoustic jazz style of Earl Klugh is suggested, and 'Ry's Blues' borrows the sinuous blues guitar style of Ry Cooder.
